Alternative Land Use Options for Rural Areas – Biomass Production for Energetic Purposes

Objective of the summer school

Particularly for rural poorly developed regions with unfavourable climatic and edaphic site conditions the development of alternative land use options seems to be of growing importance. In this context short-rotation plantations with fast growing tree species (poplar, willow) have been tested successfully. Another example for alternative land use on these sites is the Alley Cropping approach, an agroforestry system which combines agricultural and forest land use elements. This land use system was adapted for Central European conditions.

In this context the summer school offers the opportunity for junior researchers to learn about the experiences gained with the production of biomass for energetic use. In addition, knowledge on the ecological and also economic effects of biomass production as well as the utilization and limitations of biomass in power plants will be discussed. The contribution of agroforestry systems to Carbon-sequestration and Nitrogen-fixation will be investigated during a laboratory course. Most up-to-date methods will be applied to determine isotope ratios of C13/C12and of N14/N15. The theoretical knowledge will be completed by excursions to experimental sites of the BTU and a visit at a biomass power plant in the region.
